St Peter, Aix-en-Provence I

Watercolour on 300 lb Paper,
56 cm x 38 cm (22" x 15")

(Private Collection, Ontario)

Two watercolours of St Peter, identifiable by his key, from Saint-Sauveur Cathedral at Aix-en-Provence illustrate the same principle as the two pictures of the portal: one is painted to produce mass (St Peter II), and one to produce graphic effect (St Peter I, here). This one conveys the incised and sculpted lines of the figure and the architectural detail with a lightness and sharpness which recalls pen and ink drawing or the simplicity of an overexposed photograph.
